Work/Study Programs (On-Campus Employment)
If you are interested in positions with the Work/Study program, Leadership, Engagement and Ambassadorship program (LEAP) and Research at York (RAY) for the fall/winter 2024-25 term, you will now need to apply through the Work Study Application.
About Work/Study Programs
Our Work/Study Programs give eligible undergraduate students paid, on-campus work that develops professional skills and contributes to the University. Enrich your classroom experiences and get support and tools needed to develop competencies that will contribute to your long-term personal and professional success.
Eligibility
You must complete the Work Study Application for each academic session in which you seek a Work/Study position.
The University reviews your application and lets hiring units know if you are eligible to work. Eligibility to hold a Work/Study position does not guarantee an employment offer.
If you withdraw from your studies during the academic session or fail to meet the criteria listed below, you are no longer eligible for the Work/Study program and must resign from your position.
Fall/Winter 2024-2025 Work Study Application Period
The application for Work/Study, LEAP and RAY programs opens from July 15, 2024 to February 21, 2025.
Restrictions
You can accept only one Work/Study position per session.
If you are a non-degree student — for example, a visiting student or attending York on a Letter of Permission — then you are not eligible for a Work/Study position.
You cannot hold a Work/Study position in the same term as when you hold a NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) Undergraduate Student Research Award or its equivalent.
Types of Work/Study Positions
Becoming YU
Students who take a Work/Study or LEAP position also participate in our Becoming YU program.
Becoming YU helps you:
- create meaningful personal and professional goals and objectives
- recognize the value of your personal, academic and professional experiences
- identify your competencies and skills
- promote yourself with confidence.
Responsibilities
As a Work/Study student, you are a valued York University employee and have important responsibilities. You are expected to:
- actively participate in the Becoming YU program
- complete your assigned duties
- inform your supervisor about your availability to work the agreed-upon hours
- immediately tell your supervisor if you are unable to honour your work commitments and try to arrange a more workable schedule
- immediately inform your supervisor if you withdraw from your studies during the academic session — you will no longer be eligible for the Work/Study Program and must resign from your position.
Salary
Hourly rates vary with the job, responsibilities and your work experience. You can see the salary range on the job posting and/or when you interview for the position.
The hiring department pays you through York’s payroll system. Your employer gets a York employee number for you, keeps track of the hours you work and submits a payroll timesheet on your behalf every two weeks. Discuss any concerns about your pay with your employer.
Student Financial Services does not pay students and cannot adjust your pay.
